Begin your mastery of the fire in our BEDROCK FIRECRAFT class.  Many of us can "start" a fire, but  our consistency is not as high as it should be. Even when we get one going, it rarely resembles the beautiful flame we desire that is functional and enjoyable.  Instead, we tend to chase everyone out of camp with a smoking mess that eventually goes out and calls us to start the humbling task all over again.  This gets frustrating, uses up valuable resources, and can be avoided with a simple understanding of just a few fire concepts and skills.

In this class we will train in (but not limited too) the following:

• Fire Mentalities such as the Fire Triangle and the all-important Heat Wave

• Knowing the best fire materials to gather using the DEAD COWS method

• Learn the relationship between ignition sources and the tinder they pair well with

• Gain a deep understanding on what a lighter can and cannot do and when you should abandon it for a different ignition source

• Making a good choice on what "match" you want to stake your life on and what you should leave at home or on the store shelf

• Usage of commercial emergency tinder and what natural emergency tinder you can use when it is depleted

• Learn the TRIBE FireLay that takes the strengths of the commonly taught firelays and eliminates their weaknesses

• Reveal the myths of the traditional stone-lined firepit and the truth of what it is actually good for

• Test yourself with our Emergency Fire Challenge to see how you would stand up in a real life threatening situation when seconds count

• Train to use the Ferro Rod as your "new" go-to source of fire ignition so that you can conserve the lighter and matches for the emergencies they work well for

• Create different tinder bundles from the landscape and successfully ignite them with a hot spark

Student Gear Requirements:

• Backpack (or similar) to manage own gear

• Personal Water bottle (drinking water will be available onsite)

• Additional clothing/raingear for seasonal weather

• ​Over-the-counter meds if needed

• Insect Repellent

• Notebook/writing implement for personal class notes if desired

• All other tools, course gear, and resources will be provided by Ranger's Ridge
